What's Windows 10?

Unless you were on a trip to outer space (without connection to earth's internet) or you are a housewife who only cares about tv serials, you would have heard of the new operating system that Microsoft has released.

It is called Windows 10. Yes, After Windows 8, they skipped a number and are calling it Windows 10.

Why call it Windows 10, not 9?

The internet was flooded with people guessing the reason for this. Needless to say, memes were created.

To sum it up
Joker meme about frenzy over no windows 9

Then, I read this article that actually made sense. According to it, the reason was first tweeted by Christer Kaitila.

The link that he mentions is his tweet, shows a number of examples across Github, Google Code, Fedora project and other repos that check "if(version, startswith("windows 9")" to determine if it is Windows 95/98. Sadly, Windows 9 would be a false match. Stupid coding indeed. Maybe they thought that After Windows (19)95 and (19)98, the next numbers would be Windows (20)00, (20)01, (20)02 and it would be after 90 versions that the numbers will loop around to (20)90 :P  Still stupid as the version numbers started as Windows 1,2,3.

example of code that checks for windows 9

This checking is present in nearly 3000 instances. God knows how many times its been used in Microsoft's proprietary code :)

Very surprisingly, there is a meme-like image that got the reason right. (It's hardly funny hence)

why new windows is called windows 10

Some websites, even go on to say other reasons for skipping 9. Only Microsoft guys know the exact reason(s), and mostly it is only the top management and not the rest of the 99.9% of employees. While we can try to figure out plausible reasons, all this is guessing about the past. None of us predicted that, Windows 9 number would be skipped. It's like trying to find different ways to solve a problem knowing that the problem has already been solved :P :D

So what's new?

If you are like me then you can install Windows 10 Technical Preview, its free! (see below) and see it for yourself.. it's a lot of fun :) .. or you can Google it and read articles if you don't get kicks from trying it new things.

Giving people a preview

Microsoft has made Windows 10 available for free!! Okay, don't get too excited. It is still beta meaning it has lots of bugs, and Microsoft will generously let you use it while you test out the new OS for it :D . Developers can also use it to build and test their software on it. That's the real purpose :) and its called 'Windows Insider Program' . The free license will get revoked in April,2015 [I know, I was like "WTF!"] when Windows 10 is ready and a relatively stable version (there are always Windows Updates) is released to market.

I'l cover how to install it on your PC in next post.
